What does funeral insurance not cover?
Funeral insurance covers the funeral services set out in the policy. It does not cover anything outside that list, such as a higher-grade coffin, more flowers or a niche in perpetuity, nor, if the policy says so, the part of the cost that exceeds the sum insured. In addition, many policies do not cover transporting the body abroad unless that cover was taken out. Some apply a waiting period (“período de carencia”) to the death from illness of anyone who has only just joined. Exclusions that cut back rights must be highlighted and signed separately.

José Manuel AlburquerqueWhat is usually left out
- Services not included in the policy or beyond what was agreed.
- The difference if the service costs more than the sum insured.
- Transport or repatriation from abroad, if it was not included.
- Death from illness during the initial waiting period, if the policy provides for one. As it cuts back the main cover, it can normally only be applied to you if it is highlighted and you signed it separately.
If the sum insured falls short
Over the years, the cost of the service rises and the sum insured may fall short. Many policies say that the difference is paid by the heirs. Check every year that the policy updates the sum insured and that it covers what the service would cost where you live.
If there is a surplus
If the service costs less than the sum insured, the difference belongs to the policyholder or, if he or she has died, to his or her heirs. Ask the insurer to give you a breakdown of the cost of the service and to pay you the difference.
